2008 Doran Ford GT With recent European domination in the FIA’s GT2 class, Kevin Doran is now offering an all-American alternative. To take on the might of both Ferrari and Porsche, his company, Doran Enterprises, has convered the Ford GT into an all-out racecar. Called the GT-R this variant is prepared to ACO GT2 specifications which make it eligible for FIA GT, ALMS and the 24 Hours of LeMans. Doran’s car is the third Ford GT designed for the track and trails the GT300 made in 2005 by TOM’S for the Japanese DHG championship and the Matech GT that currently dominates FIA GT3. Doran transforms the GT-R out of his workshop in Lebanon, Ohio. It uses a naturally aspirated version of the GT’S V8 which is prepared by Roush Industries. With all the restrictors, the racecar actually makes less horsepower than the road version. The engine is mated to a 6-speed Emco transmission. The chassis was modified to include a wider track, lower ride height and new suspension geometry. Overall bodyshape was left unchanged, but new carbon fiber panels include larger wheel arches and a deep front splitter. Robertson Racing took delivery of the first GT-R and debuted it at the Sebring 12 Hours. Despite a lack of track testing, the car made the distance and placed 10th in class. This set the tone for the rest of the season, finishing at best 8th in class at the Detroit GP. Throughout the season they suffered a crash at Limerock and engine failure at Mosport which resulted in DNFs. Mid-season, a second car surfaced for Black Swan Racing in striking Falken Tire livery. |

2005 Ford GT Overview
The Ford GT40 concept was first seen in Detroit at the 2002 North American International Auto Show. Ford planned to build the mid-engine supercar to celebrate the Ford’s Centennial. The response from the public to the resurrection of the record-setting winner of four consecutive Le Mans 24-Hour races in the 1960s was so intense that Ford decided put a limited run into production.
Ford has planned to build approximately 1500 annually for 2 to 3 years, depending on demand. The GT is powered by a 550-horsepower V8, mated upto a six-speed manual transmission and is capable of speeds in excess of 200mpg! The two-seater GT is an exotic car in everyway except when it comes to its price, Ford’s suggested retail price of $150,000 puts it in exclusive company.
It will stretch most drivers’ personal limits on winding mountain roads while feeling not entirely out of sorts in commuter mode.
The GT isn’t intended for weekend getaways, it doesn’t have much of a trunk.
2005 Ford GT Model Lineup
Ford has made it easy to choose a GT: there’s only one model to choose from with the same engine and transmission. Not that it is something to be worried about. The GT has a softer touch than it’s big brother – the purpose built GT40 that won Le Mans. The engine is a high-tech, supercharged, midship-mounted, 5.4-liter V8 making a truly scintillating 550 horsepower and 500 pound-feet of torque.
The MSRP ($139,995) buys everything and more that anybody really needs to enjoy this car the way it should be enjoyed. Standard equipment includes air conditioning, AM/FM/CD/MP3 two-speaker stereo, tilt-and-telescope steering wheel, power windows, seats and mirrors, abundant leather trim, keyless remote, and textured rubber floormats.
An optional McIntosh stereo ($4000) adds an eight-inch subwoofer and one-inch A-pillar speakers but still accommodating only a single CD and minus the MP3 capability. Other options: forged aluminum wheels ($3500), painted brake calipers ($750) in choice of red or gun metal gray (stock is black), and painted racing/bodyside logo stripes ($5000). Buyers looking for understatement can opt to delete the standard “Ford GT” bodyside tape stripes.
Standard safety equipment includes frontal airbags, antilock brakes, a child seat tether bracket and latch assembly on the passenger seat and a tire inflation kit in lieu of a spare tire.
